Won-Tolla's Library: Theresa

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 56482

The next manuscript that caught Mark's attention was smaller and less fancy looking, just a single page on white paper with black trim. He kept looking at it for a while before he realized that what had caught his attention was not its look, but the way it smelled.
It smelled like Grandfather's boots, the old ones he had worn during a run-in with a skunk a couple of years before Mark was born. According to what the old man's old man said, he had washed them several times, but the stench still lingered, and he had finally got a new pair and kept the old ones (out in the toolshed) as a conversation piece. Actually calling Gramps' storytelling "conversation" had to be the understatement of the year, but there you are.

Mark glanced curiously over at the wolf who claimed to be an author, and was surprised to find that he had turned black and white.

"Told you an author can do anything!" the skunkish wolf grinned. "Well, if you're not into cheery holiday tales, maybe this one's more to your liking. It, or rather the story it's a set-up for, is rather gloomy - at least it's meant to be, if you catch my drift. And as at least two of your senses are telling you, it's about a skunk.A skunk woman, to be precise - what some people call a skunkette."

"Is that what the heading means?"

"Well, at least I've been told that is the French term. Anyway, the beginning of the chapter is pretty expository, but to zip through the background, this story branch starts with a young furry fan named Richard (who's mentioned in one of the options) who gets his paws on a magical costume. When his mother Theresa..."

"It says Therése here?"

"You'll find out when you start reading it. When Theresa finds out about her son's new hobby, she gets a costume of her own that can transform her into pretty much anything furry."

"Pretty Deus ex machina isn't it?"

"Maybe, but I didn't write that part. I wasn't going to exploit that concept anyway. To continue, one dark night Theresa transforms into a skunkette for protection during a visit to the seedy side of the town. She is assaulted by some shady characters who soon discover that her new parts are fully functional."

"Eeew. Is that why the manuscript smells that way?"

"Sort of. Books and manuscripts in a magic library are often affected by the stories they tell. Anyway, after this encounter Theresa goes on to meet a man who wants to sell her a collector's item. At this point the previous author left me with two choices - a first editon book, or an antique Pez dispenser."

Mark snickered. "So which one did you choose?"

The black wolf grinned back. "Read the story and find out, young man!"

  1. "Okay, as long as the story stinks less than the paper it's written on..." He starts reading.
  2. "Not to be difficult, but I don't think this is quite my cup of tea either. Have you got any... um... cleaner manuscripts?"
  3. "Uh, I think I hear my mother calling for me..."
  4. Suddenly Mowgli comes running up to Won-Tolla and shouts "We are one blood, you and I!"
