Xander and the Dragon Slayer

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 56224

Fred chanted from the Summoning Scroll he had gotten from Belboz. The words were strange and uncouth, not meant to be spoken by the mouths of men. But Fred would not be daunted. Slowly, laboriously, Fred spoke each word aloud. Unfortunately though, when Fred came to the very last word in the arcane spell he found that it was a bit smudged and rather difficult to make out. But if Fred stopped now the spell would prove worthless, for even the slightest pause in reciting an incantation would ruin the whole effect. So, without skipping even a single beat, Fred spoke out the last word as best as he could figure it out.

"Hellmouth!"

There was a sudden billowing of smoke, a flash of lightning, and the sound of a far off boom.

And there, from out of the grey smoke, stood a man. He was tall and lanky. He wore weathered pants and work boots, a long-sleeved sweat shirt, a large leather tool belt, and an eye patch. And upon his noble face was the goofiest look of surprise Fred had ever seen.

"Crap, I'm not in Kansas anymore," the man muttered.

Fred stepped forward and hailed the man. "Hail, friend and comrade. I am Lord Fred of Allaria."

The one-eyed man stared at the knight and then looked around at the cave he was standing in. "Uh, hail right back atcha, Prince Valiant. And um, I am... Sir Xander of Harris. But I'm not really sure what I'm doing here. You wouldn't happen to know would you?"

"I have summoned you," Fred answered, "with a magic scroll given me by a wizard most powerful. I am in need of help, you see. I am on a quest."

"And so you summoned me?" Xander replied, a bit doubtfully. "I really don't want to spoil your plans, but I was kind of busy building a shopping mall. And if I don't get back they're going to fire me."

"But my quest," Fred responded, taken aback by Xander's lack of enthusiasm.

Xander looked at the knight and felt a little sad for him. The tin man was obviously hoping for a more gung ho kind of hero to show up. Xander knew exactly how the knight felt, he'd had blind dates that had started the same way. "Uh, so, what exactly is your quest?" Xander asked, even though he knew full well that he wasn't going to like the answer.

"To slay the vile dragon!" Fred answered proudly.

Yup, Xander didn't like the answer at all. "Listen, not to rain on your parade or anything, but I've been out of the quest business for a while now. Saving the world and hunting down big bads, well, I'm taking a little break from all that right now. So, I really think you should get somebody else to help you kill that mean old dragon. And in the meantime, howbout sending me back home."

Fred was crestfallen. He had expected a great warrior, a valiant comrade- in-arms. Instead, he was sent this... whatever he was. But Fred knew where his duty lay. This man was a stranger and not honor-bound to join the quest. Xander had made the request to be returned whence he came and Fred had to respect his wishes and do as he wanted, however much it pained him. But then Fred suddenly realized that he did not know how to send the man back home.

Xander was not surprised. He wasn't happy about it, but he really wasn't all that surprised.

"The wizard must know though," Fred pointed out.

"Well then let's go see him," Xander said, but with the sneaky suspicion that it wasn't going to be as easy as that.
