Fred continues to walk straight ahead into the darkness, ignoring the
elf's increasingly more vociferous demands that he return the bottle of
wine. Soon Fred is out of hearing range of the elf, and at this point he removes a flint and a candle from his backpack. The illumination afforded by the flame when lit is meagre, but better than nothing, and it allows the intrepid knight to increase his pace somewhat. Until now Fred has been fortunate in that the tunnel down which he was walking has proven to be consistent in height, width and direction; now however the tunnel appears to veer sharply to the right. Having little alternative, Fred continues down the tunnel's new tangent. The new direction however appears to be a turn for the worse in more ways than one: Fred soon finds the ground beneath his feet becoming damp and slippy, while the air is both colder and more foul than before. Before long, Fred finds himself wading through ice-cold water up to his thighs, while the quality of the air is now so poor the candle is spluttering and looks like it might be extinguished at any moment. The cumulative effect of the deteriorating conditions is that Fred now feels cold, tired and out of breath. It is therefore with extreme annoyance and disappointment he comes to what appears to be a dead end.
