An Unlikely Trio

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 42638

As the cave collapsed behind them, the unlikely trio took to the air, escaping the mountain’s innards just in time. And at that, Fred burst into melody, singing:

Oh look at me now!
Flying so free!
What a magical ride!
It’s so good to be me!
I can no longer hide!
I can no longer flee!
This joy that’s inside!
This feeling of glee!

Astra turned to Fred, confused and somewhat taken back. “What on earth are you doing?”

“I thought it appropriate,” Fred replied. “I’m really conflicted right now, however. I think perhaps, in retrospect, I should have taken my medication this morning. All this business with voices in my head and Shoggoths and the like. I mean, what the Hell am I?”

“I thought your singing was rather nice,” the dragon lauded him, smitten with a sudden hankering to hear even more. “Please, do go on.”

“Wait!” Fred interjected. “What about the kitty! Oh dear God, we forgot the kitty!”

“For a half-daemon/half-human atrocity, you sure seem tenderhearted,” Astra noted, steadying herself as they gained in altitude, soaring above cloud level. “Thank you for your help back there, by the way. As for the kitten, I don’t think there’s much we can do for it now. How did you summon it, anyway?”

Fred thought about that for a moment. He held out his hand and focused his mind: Soft, fuzzy, cute Lo and behold! The kitten materialized in his outstretched arms and started clawing him again. He dropped it. It fell into the air, where death awaited it thousands of feet below. “Oh well,” he sighed. “I tried. So what now?”

“Good question,” the dragon concurred. “About that bothersome Quest of yours, you don’t really mean to slay me still, do you?”

“Oh heavens no,” Fred assured him. “I mean, you’ve been plaguing my kingdom for time out of mind, but that’s all in the past. Let’s let bygones be bygones. The two of you have made me realize a great many things today.”

“Like what?” Astra prodded him.

Music befitting of a Disney movie started up from God only knows where, and Fred cleared his throat, preparing once again to sing his heart out. “Like...”

“Never mind!” implored the princess, as the sound of a record being scratched emanated from nowhere and the music came to a sudden halt. “You learned a great many things today. Let’s just leave it at that. Being that my quest was to slay you, your quest was to slay the dragon, and the dragon’s home is now in ruins, it seems none of us can return to our place of origin. We’ll have to forge a new life together. And it must be done surreptitiously.”

Fred nodded, and pulled out his pocket dictionary to look up the word surreptitious. “Well put,” he said once that was done. “We’re like a family now, the three of us. A scaly serpent, an armored princess, and a demon-possessed knight with severe personality issues that stem all the way back from childhood. Where shall we make our new home?”

“I’ve heard the string of island that lie far to the south are nice enough,” the dragon suggested.

“I’ve heard travelers’ tales of the far west, suggesting it’s devoid of civilization and thus uninhibited by the legalities and rules that go along with it,” Astra added.

“And I’ve always wanted to see the warm mountain meadows that grace the Mountains of Goth,” Fred implied.

Eventually they decided on...

  1. the southern isles.
  2. the far west.
  3. the Goth Mountains.
  4. Mexico.
