Well Fred went back to the seaplant house before Crystal returned and
never told her of his attempt to escape. Fred married the mermaid and they
lived comfortably together, not quite in passionate love perhaps, but
they're needs were provided for, and eventually they grew to love each
other--the love of familiarity. It was a mundane lifestyle, but Fred had
learned his lesson. Besides, he thought, looking back over the last fifty
years of his life, I have beautiful children, and even more beautiful
granchildren. His progeny were certainly beautiful. They had inherited
Fred's human form, but had retained a certain shimmer in their skin from
Crystal.
One day, when he and Crystal were enjoying the quiet of their home after
the grandkiddies had left, Fred chuckled to himself. Crystal lifted her
head and smiled at him, "What's so funny?" "Nothing, honey, it's just
that..." and Fred explained what had happened that day long ago. A strange
look came over Crystal's face. Concerned, Fred asked, "What is it?"
Crystal explained with sorrow that there had only been one seamonster and
that since he had killed it, he could have left after that. Fred froze. He
thought of all that he had left behind, and all that he would leave behind
here if he went back.
