Just In Time Or Just Too Late?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 3818

The advantage of using the jewel over simply destroying the avatar, even if that could be achieved, was that destroying the avatar would leave the AI's or human's consciousness still intact in its base unit (artificial or organic). It could then prepare and send down to Terra a new avatar, which they would have no easy way of tracking down since they wouldn't know its appearance. There was the chance that the Alliance fleet, once notified, could determine which AI or human was involved, but that couldn't be relied upon. Inquirer hoped that whoever it was wouldn't realise the significance of the gem. Otherwise it would withdraw its "being" from the avatar before she could trap it.

Meanwhile Seeker was beginning to think that it was time to pull out, since the number opposed to him seemed to be increasing all the time, and unless he was mistaken now included a couple of avatars, whom he assumed must be those of Probe and Inquirer. He wondered why one of them was waving a gem similar to the one she wore on her own forehead.

Even if it was possible to withdraw this avatar, it would be recognised in future. Better perhaps to give it up and return later in a new avatar. That would regain the element of surprise and he could make another kidnap attempt. On the other hand, with Alliance forces now alerted to the possibility of traitors in their midst, even if not to his own small group, getting a new avatar and returning to Terra's surface might not be as straightforward as it had been before.

As Seeker pondered his options, meanwhile holding off the attackers who seemed to have no weapons that could be immediately lethal to him, he started to retreat in case he decided to stay with this avatar. As he made his decision - to abandon it - Inquirer lunged forward, jewel in hand, and pressed it to the avatar's forehead...

  1. Just in time.
  2. A split-second too late.
