It's the last game o' the season - Kansas City Chiefs at San Diego for a
place in the playoffs. The Chiefs have just converted a touchdown and
extra point with 13 seconds left - score is now San Diego 24 Kansas City
21. The Special Teams take the field for
the Chargers' kick-off. The Chargers' kicker-offer, Mike Scifres, aims it high and left; it goes high but his aim is off somewhat and it sails straight down the middle - and into the hands of Dante Hall on his own 22 yard line. Without a moment's hesitation, Hall heads down the field at breakneck pace. As he gets into the Chargers' half of the field he avoids one tackle, then another, then a third, deftly sidestepping the linebackers like a ballet dancer. With two seconds left he approaches the endzone but finds his way blocked by the two safeties. Undeterred he jumps what seems to be ten feet in the air, over the despairing lunges. He lands neatly on his feet in the end zone. Touchdown - game over. Play-offs here we come!!! It is not until Dante Hall tries to spike the ball that he notices anything is wrong. Usually the ball springs back off the astroturf - in this case however it merely makes a sickening crunching sound and lies there, oozing - BLOOD??? Looking closer, Dante Hall now sees that what he had taken for a football was in fact a severed head. But whose?
