At first Fred thought that the nomads might be sleeping, though it would
be odd for them to sleep in the open rather than in their tents and for
them all to be asleep during the day. But after he had shaken a couple
with no effect, and then checked and found no pulse, he realised that they
were all dead.
Fred could think of two possible explanations. One was that they had been poisoned. But their faces were peaceful, as if they had just fallen asleep, not wracked in pain as would surely have been the case if they had been poisoned. The only other possibility that he could think of was some almost unbelievably powerful magic. Why would anyone want to wipe out a tribe of nomads, though? What was he to do now? It did not seem safe to stay here, but where else could he go? The woman probably needed medical attention. At best, she was exhausted, at worst she might easily have internal injuries. Even if there was nothing seriously wrong with her, both of them would need shelter when night fell, but he was loath to use one of the dead nomads' tents. Then there was the question of food and water. The food in his pack had been ruined by its immersion in the underground river, and it was now many hours since either of them had had anything to eat or drink.
