Leftwards to something

After ten minutes of walking, they came to a staircase. And a strange vertical tunnel on the right. The staircase was dark and damp and a strange keening sound was coming from it. The tunnel, well, it was pure oddness. As Fred watched, a tiny pebble perched on the edge tipped and fell over. And rose straight up at a very slow speed.

"Oddness indeed." Fred said, scratching his chin.

What do the two companions do now?

1. Go up the dark and damp staircase.
2. They are forced to go up the tunnel when a river of lava flows down the stairs.
3. They pause for a bathroom break.
