Bickering Bandits

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 3014

"Where are the other two?!" the bandit leader shouted. He was angry that his two captives had nothing of value, and had hoped the other two would have made this little caper worthwhile. The four men cantered up to the group and one of them spoke. "They gave us the slip. They're up in the woods somewhere."

"And so you just turned around and left?!" their leader roared.

The man who had spoken turned red with anger, "I thought this was supposed to have been an ambush, Tolan. If I knew it was gonna be a horse race I would have given lil' Nellie here a bit more to eat this mornin!"

Tolan glared at the man. "DON'T mouth off to me, Roddy."

The others in the group shuffled about nervously. Fred guessed that Tolan and Roddy were anything but fast friends.

"Listen Tolan," Roddy said, straightening up in his saddle so all would listen. "I told you we should have waited before springing our trap. We come chasin' too early and they're bound to run off I said. But no, you wouldn't hear it. And so now half our prize has taken for the hills. But one of 'em happens to be a nasty little dwarf with a very sharp axe. You want his purse, YOU go find him. I'll not lose my head for the likes of you."

"Maybe you'll lose your head anyways," Tolan said with a hard face.

Bill suddenly piped up. "So, uh, Tolan. What are we gonna do with 'em? They ain't got no money." Roddy stared in angry disbelief, "No money?!" Bill paled as Tolan scowled at him. "M-maybe we can hold 'em for ransom?" suggested Harry, trying to break the ugly mood. "And who are we gonna ransom them too?" Tolan asked derisively. "Then let's tie 'em to a tree and leave 'em," Roddy spoke out.

Suddenly Astra surprised them all. "Why don't you let me join you?" she asked. "I can pull my own weight and I'm handy with a sword." Fred stared at her, shocked at the offer. Tolan smiled and then laughed. "Handy with a sword?," he said and looked her up and down. "I bet you are. You're probably good with a knife too. But then it wouldn't take much talent to slit my throat while I sleep."

"She has the look of an amazon, Tolan," Karl grunted and edged his horse away from the tall woman.

"And when was the last time you saw an amazon?" Tolan smirked. "They're like ghosts, hiding up in the hills across the border. Any man here would be dead before he even knew he'd been spotted." He looked down at the strong featured Aqualarian and a thought came to his mind. He turned to the others and said, "She's a strong one, that's for sure. And her friend ain't no bag o'bones neither. I say we head down to Walants and pay a visit to the Auctioneers. We'll get a good price and can sell the horse at the same time. We'll make a party out of it."
