Fred was ecstatic! With one hand free he was soon able to unchain the
other as well. Once free he looked about the room again, always keeping
in mind the mage and the she-troll (it would only be a matter of time
before they returned). He pulled his thoughts to the present. The room was
obviously a holding cell and the evil pair had caught many an unwary
person in their grasp. He wondered at how they could live here in the very
shadow of a dragon, perhaps they were in league with it, or perhaps this
was only a short portion of many kilometers of cave and tunnel, enough for
the dragon to take no notice.
There was one door leading out of the room; a gate really, made of metal bars. Fred shook at the bars but to no avail. He examined the walls, they were very smooth and very wet. The whole place stank of water and fungus and the dripping was unending - Fred wondered if that could prove his salvation. Fred began to claw at the stone and soil near the door's hinge and, sure enough, it came loose under his hand. The rock crumbled only a bit, but the dirt was so muddy that chunks of it fell to the gound. Fred worked faster; he grabbed, he clawed, he dug with all his might. Finally, after what seemed a milenia the hinge of the door began to creak and to give way. Fred pushed harder, he pulled, and he dug some more. At last the metal fell some inches outward and Fred was able to squeaze through!
