The Tale of Belboz and the Dragon’s Toy

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 28072

Checking his coin purse, Fred realized that he only had but one gold left! Who would’ve thought that he’d need money down in this cave? Hopefully, the story would provide enough useful information that Fred could determine the Dragon’s favorite toy…and how to take it away. “Right,” said Fred. “Let’s hear the story.”

And so, Belboz began…

Well, it all began several years ago, when I wasn’t much older than yourself. I had just graduated from Necromancer’s School. Part of the agreement of attending that prestigious academy was that each graduate must spend 5 years aiding a rural village. I was assigned to the village of Witchgreen, which is long gone but quite close to where we are now.

As you can imagine, there’s not much for a Necromancer to do in such an environment, so mostly I kept to myself. Except for harvest season, of course, when the local farmers would hire me to raise zombies to help them work their fields. A fairly mundane existence, really.

Towards the end of my tenure, that all changed. After a lifetime of collecting treasure and wandering the world, the Dragon had decided it was time to settle down. Unfortunately for us, he chose our village in which to do so. He demanded that the entire village devote itself to digging him out a vast network of caves in which to house himself and his spoils.

Naturally, the prospect of spending the rest of their lives enslaved to the Dragon didn’t exactly tickle the fancy of the villagers. They came to me and asked for my help.

”Hold it right there!” said Fred. “When are you going to get to the Dragon’s Favorite Toy?”

”I’m getting there,” groused Belboz. “Just listen to the story. Here’s what happened next…”

  1. "I agreed to help the villagers."
  2. "I packed my bags and snuck quietly out of town."
