Reach Out and Touch Someone (Part 1)

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 23268

"Then we'll just have to find a way of speeding up communications," Jarlath says.

We all discuss just how we could do that, and finally decide on what we hope will be the best course of action. It is not without risk, what we've chosen to do. However, nearly everything worth doing has some amount of risk associated with it.

As for the person who will be doing the "speeding up" of communication, that honor falls to me, of course.

Not that the other mages aren't capable for the basics of what comes next, mind you, it's just that I have a few more tricks up my magerobe sleeve than they do. After all, I HAVE been practicing magic a bit longer than they have....

How much longer I really can't tell you. Truthfully, exactly how long I cannot. Quit counting my birthdays rather soon after my hatching (first century or two). Oh, I pretty much knew (at the time of the event) when my 500th birthday rolled around. That was the very day Tiamat, in her wisdom and mercy, granted me the abilities all dragons are gifted with upon reaching wyrm status. Few to none of us long lived ones (like the elves, dwarves, or dragons) kept a count of our years and our birthday after the first century or two. In fact until recently (thanks to human influences upon other non-human cultures), we hardly even bothered with learning when our birthday fell, human calender wise. It was vague at best and let us leave it at that.

Isn't like we non-humans were the only ones who paid little heed to keeping track of calenders as far as births go. Up until recently the lower class (i.e. the peasants/serfs) hardly cared to bother.

No, the only exception to this rule would have to be my friend, Sigin (the one who traveled around in the TARDIS with Dr. Who). In order to keep his true faith hidden from any agents of the Council of Wyrms of his world, he needed to have the tightest and best of mind shields. Mind shields that are of the type that don't advertise their existence in all but the most intensive of magical examinations. For that to work a prime prerequisite for that was to know himself in a very highly detailed manner and THAT included such otherwise trivial matters like not only the exact day, year and month of his birthday. It went so far as to know it down to the very SECOND! It's something I believe he learned from Sato....but I never really have asked. It'd be rude to ask such a thing, dragon etiquette wise. He cast that mind shield spell and it still stays in place even to this day, and only the most intrusive (and destructive) of mind reading spells will get through without his permission. AND because of that spell (which cannot be removed by him or anyone else without scrambling his own neurons), he knows down to the second how old he is STILL (and will continue to know forevermore). That....or the very natural (for dragons) event of "Eye meets Eye". Not even the most powerful of mortal spells I have ever even heard rumor of can prevent that if a dragon is still a dragon. Oh, change the dragon into another species will prevent it from happening (but not cure the condition once it takes place), but still....

But still, at least Sigin will HAVE a next birthday!

See, right now we have a little bit of business to take care of before I make any calls. Or maybe I should say that Astra and Samuel have some business to take care of.

As soon as he recovers, Illura has declared that Astra (her champion) shall meet Samuel in mortal combat.

  1. Don't know how good Samuel is at the sword, but I'm willing to bet he's going to have a hard time at it with Astra from what I've seen in her fighting skills.
