A Source of Chaos

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 22008

"So what can you tell me?" Samuel asks the mage.

The man looks nervous. He knows that being a mage won't be enough to protect him if Samuel should take against him. "We've recently detected more signs of non-Cartel magic use, Your Highness, and been able to localise them," he says. "We believe that the magic had the same 'signature' as that which we detected when Princess Rebecca was abducted. The magic started not very far from here, and then went very rapidly south, far faster than a horse could gallop. It finished up a few hours later some two hundred miles away, over the border in Zendara."

"Faster than a horse? How is that possible?"

"We hypothesise that it must have been some sort of magical transportation device, Your Highness."

"It would take four or five days hard riding to get to where they are now, then. So that would seem to put them out of my reach."

"Not necessarily, Your Highness."

Meanwhile Synizn is saying to the Champions (having first ensured that the locals are all out of earshot): "Uh, you remember that other amnesia case we had? Well, I've examined the girl Karen and, though the body may be from this world, the mind that's now within that body definitely isn't. Over the years I've come into contact with several people who had been in the 'Game 3' universe. People like Ragan - the tall redheaded one - a dragoness called Selana, and a few Scott Chens who became crewmembers of various Federation Starship Voyagers. There's a sort of - well, distinctive mental 'odour' is the best way I can put it - about these people. Karen has it very strongly. I'd say that she had only arrived here from Game 3 very recently, probably as part of the big shake-up in reality here that resulted in Princess Illura surviving."

"Could you break through the amnesia?" Jarlath asks.

"Apart from one snippet of memory, no. And a very strange snippet it was that I dragged out. She seemed to be watching herself, somehow, so that her memory came out in the second person. It was as follows:

"You feel your nipples harden in the cool air, and looking down, you see that you have a pair of enormous breasts, a trim waist, and well- rounded hips and buttocks. You are nude, of course, but that fact doesn't seem to bother you at the moment either. You suddenly have a feeling that you should be going somewhere, so you start walking. The mists swirl around you with each step, but the terrain does not change. The ground remains featureless and white, as made of marble, and the mists obscure your view of whatever might lie beyond them. Finally, after walking for what might be hours, or even days, you feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around and find yourself facing a beautiful young woman wearing a long, diaphanous white robe. You can clearly see the nipples of her inordinately large breasts through the flimsy fabric. [20427]

"That was all but, given the content, it leaves little doubt that my identification of her as being from Game 3 was correct."

"That's very worrying," Jarlath says, "given that Game 3 is what we are trying to save this world from. I've heard that people from Game 3 tend to have the oddest things happen around them for a long time, until their Game 3 'chaos energy' runs out, so having her arrive here might well be making things break down faster than we originally expected."

  1. "What about Rebecca?" Astra asks Synizn. "Did you have any luck in unearthing any memories of hers?"
