A Meeting of Cousins

Rebecca is naturally somewhat shaken by recent events, but even so she manages to put two and two together. A woman dressed as a warrior, and calling her cousin? Who else could it be but the leader of the New Amazons that one of the nobles on the hunt had mentioned? "Princess Illura?" she asks tentatively.

"Why the questioning tone in your voice, Rebecca? Surely I don't look that different in my fighting gear?"

"Er, no, I suppose not. As to whether I'm going to join you: maybe. I'm not too sure of anything at the moment. Something very strange has just happened to me." Rebecca does not trust Illura sufficiently to tell her about her memory loss, but she briefly describes the day's events from the point when she set out on the hunt.

When Rebecca has finished, Illura says: "Very odd indeed. There surely must have been some powerful magic involved, though for what purpose I cannot guess. At least it's got you away from that beast Samuel. When we get female emancipation, one of the first things to go will be arranged marriages.

"But you aren't the only one to have had a strange day. We've seemingly just fought a major battle with my father's forces over beyond that stand of trees there. (Don't go and look, if you want to hold onto your lunch.) But the weird thing is that none of us has any memory of it. Though it seems that we 'won', we've lost well over ninety per cent of our strength, and at the moment we are in no shape to prosecute the war any further. So I need to come up with some sort of plan for what we can do instead. I wish that I could ask Aaron for advice, but I assume that he's in the capital, and I can't go there of course."

1. Rebecca does her best to look like someone who knows who Aaron is.
