Fred's fatal weakness in this case was that he could not swim. He started
sneezing in the icy water and realized he had caught a cold. Not knowing
which way was back and which way was forward, Fred climbed up into a
small alcove. There were rats scurrying around, large rats. Fred yelled
at them and they ran away, into a narrow hole deeper in the alcove. Fred
realized the hole was just big enough for him to squeeze into.
