Bent Conceptions

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20222

The youth turns and looks at Fred. "Who are you? Did you bring me here?"

Fred tells the youth that he must help him kill the Dragon or they would both be mincemeat. The youth looked at Fred with amazement. "You look like one of the outsider's from the south yet speak my language as if it were your own!"

"Listen," said Fred a bit perplexed by that reaction to his statement of closest death. "You are speaking Common, get it, its called Common 'cause its common. Now, about that Drag--"

"No," interrupted the youth. "I am speaking Synese, this must be some form of magic..."

"Listen, it was magic that brought you here..." and Fred explained the events of the last half hour, as well as the Dragon's attacks on his homeland and his mission to kill it.

"Ah," said the youth. "You are Samurai Fredrigo Dhonair of Suffexallaria. I am Tenchi Nogusaki, a humble nin of the black cord degree."

Fred didn't understand everything he just heard, but he knew that time was a-wasting. "Listen, Ten, we don't have time for this. We are in the Shreken, get it, the Shreken, home of monsters, creepy crawlies, buggaboos, and the assorted flesh-eater. Somewhere in here is a dragon...the Dragon. It's mean, big, bad, cruel, and loves torturing my people. You are here because some necromancer gave me--"

"I am confused," interrupted the youth again. "You see, first - how could a necromancer call me forth? I am not dead. Necromancer is one adept in the calling of the dead, not the living. Second - this dragon you speak of cannot be a dragon, it is impossible."

Fred stared at this youth and wondered what kind of spell that mage had actually given him. "Listen; I don't care if he was a necromancer or the bloomin' tooth-fairy! You are here because of him. He's back in that corridor, a fair ways away, maybe we should just go back and get a refund on my scroll!"

"Ah so," interrupted the youth yet a third time. "A mage, sorcerer, a magic-user, a warlock... but not a necromancer, words and their meanings are of prime import in all that one must be in this world."

Fred couldn't help but think that this whole thing was happening because of one smudged word on a scroll, but there was no time for this. "OK, not a bloody necromancer, got it. But whatever you say, I know its a dragon we're hunting, a dragon we're gonna kill, a dragon that is gonna meet its demise at my hands."

"Can't be," said the youth with all the confidence in the world.

"Yes...it...can," said Fred with all the patience he could still muster.

"Dragons are good."

Fred froze, his eyes nearly popped out of his head, then he bowled over laughing. "What kind of weed have you been smoking?!? Hahahawhahabwhaha! Good? Dragons? Those two words are mutually exclusive!"

"I beg to differ," said the youth. "In my lands dragonkinde has left a lasting legacy. They are spirits of the wind and of fire. They left our lands ages ago, before the last snows melted away and left the lakes green and pure. But before they left us, they taught us the ways of respect, of the right and the left."

"You are bent, my friend," said Fred wiping away a tear from his eye. "We should be so lucky if the damned dragons left our lands! They are monsters, ruthless, cruel, intelligent, and hungry. Whatever lived in your land, whatever spirits you worship, they ain't no dragons." Fred paused while this strange youth took in the information. "Now, I summoned: you came. I need your help in killing this beast. It's no god, its a demon if ever there was one. We are in its home and we gotta be very, very careful. Got it, Ten?"

"Ah, I think so."

  1. they continue their covert movement within this upper layer of the Southern Caves...
