Heedless of the mystery of how he got here to the crowded village or where Velus went to, Fred counted his money.
"One..." he said. "Two...gold pieces." and then "Three...". This was taxing his mathematical skills to the limit. "Three...and three more ... makes...2 and 4 ... six! I have six gold pieces!" he cried.
An old lady in a blue dress gave him one more as she passed. "There you go, sonny." she said. "Buy yourself some good food."
Fred had ... um, six and one gold pieces. That could buy a day's worth of food or a wooden shield.

  3. Pickpocket some people and buy some food and a shield.
  4. Velus comes up. He's covered from snout to tail in cotton candy.
