There are many who would have had a plausible claim to the throne following Emry's death if you were only out of the way...

1. "A certain duke paid me a large sum to eliminate you. He expected me to kill you, but I decided not to."
2. "Your father came to me in secret, and asked me to find a way to keep you safe until you were old enough to look after yourself. This was my somewhat unconventional solution."
3. "And I'm sorry to have to tell you that your father is dead, poisoned a few hours after you left Caemlyn to start your quest."
