Contorting their very flexible bodies the rats spell out for Fred that
they know of a secret passage to the lair of the Dragon, one which -they
say- the dragon does not know of. "Lead the way," says Fred. And so
Fred, Velus, and the rats head away from the cursed-human holding area.
Soon they come to a fork in the tunnel system. The rats take to the right
and Fred and Velus follow. Then they take anothe right, then a left, then
a left and a right, and soon enough Fred was utterly confused as to where
they might be, as was Velus. But the rats continued on. Some of the
tunnels opened up to cavern size, while in some Fred had to stoop very low
just to pass through. Finally they entered onto a ledge that looked down
into a large, open cavern, the largest Fred had seen so far.
"Is this the Dragon's lair?" asked Fred. The rats spelled out, "No." Then Fred saw motion from down below. "Shhhhhh," he whispered. Fred's eyes had adjusted as best they could to the eerie luminescence that seemed to come from the fungi growing on the rocks, but he was still not able to see very far. What he saw, or thought he saw, was a group - some 15 to 20 - of figures milling about. They were squat in form, two-legged. There was no clothing covering their own shaggy fur the color of pure snow. Their faces showed a nose, mouth, and very large ears, but where eyes should be there was only blank flesh and bone!
