Fred had never seen such strange statues before. He decided he should
follow them. He forgot all about the young girl and the strange noise as
he went along the long aisle of golden monkey statues. The statues were about twice the size of a man, and loomed above Fred as he approached the end of the road. The road ended at the edge of a thin bridge that seemed to have been carven out of the living rock. On each side of it flames shot out from the deeps below. The bridge was so thin that one could only cross it in a single file. Beside it stood a sign saying in some perverted form of the Common Speech: The Bridge of
Gazza-Doom. Intruders will be slaughtered. So what? Fred thought. As he stepped onto the other side, Fred said to himself: "If this bridge is the only way to get to this area, it must be a perfect place to defend... Someone is apparently still defending it. At least someone must be keeping the statues-" At that moment an arrow shot out of the dark in front of Fred and hammered into the ground three feet away from where he was standing.
