Fred left the city, sticking to the lesser-traveled paths. He did not
want to run into a patrol who might do worse than had already been done to
him. He wandered through the back woods until it was getting dark. As he
travelled along, he thought he heard singing. No, he thought, it was
crying. He walked quickly to where the noise was comeing from and
discovered there a girl or around twenty crying as she gathered berries
from the bushes. She seemed in such a panicked hurry that she did not
notice Fred. "May I be of assistance?" he said. "No, please, I have not the time. If I do not get this fruit before dark, I will not have time in the morning. Do not bother me!" Fred immediately began to pick berries with her. Later, at her instruction, he gathered peaches from nearby trees. She, like he, wore a garment made from a burlap bag. She was a very pretty blonde, but the pain of toil showed in her face and hands. Were she born of different blood, her shapely figure and deep cleavage might provide her the best of the world. But now, she gathered fruit under threat of whip and torture. When it was almost too dark to see, she sighed and picked up the load of fruit they had picked. Fred carefully plucked it out of her hands in exchange for a peach. She bit into it and slurped the juice out. "You must be the prince I always dreamed would rescue me from this lot." "My lady, I am but a weary traveller; though if you would permit me to stay with you this night, I would gladly give you whatever assistance you needed in the morrow." "You even speak like a prince!" "I am only passing through." "I have not a bed." "The hay will be fine." The chatted amiably more as they walked along. Fred learned her name was Elizabeth, but that everyone called her 'Lizzy.' She was a slave to Count Dolembar. Her best friend from, Candice, and she lived in a dairy barn not far from the manor. She did not mind the work, but the Count was terrible. They finally arrived at the barn. It was a little run down. After putting the fruit in a safe place, Lizzy showed Fred where they would sleep on the second story. Fred hid the bundle with his sword under some hay and lay down. Lizzy lay down beside him facing away toward the window.
