The Rise and Fall of Farmer D'Honaire

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 1631

"It all started with this pact my father made with the dragon..."

It was a warm, sunny day in the small hamlete of Fairwater as farmer D'Honaire pushed his fruit filled wagon along the cobblestone streets. He had made this journey many times before; from his orchards to the market to sell his apples.

"Whoa is me." Farmer D'Honaire said, wiping his brow. "Will I always be a lowley apple farmer?" That's when an idea hit him!

But it will never work! He thought.

However, he could not get the idea out of his head, no matter how hard he tried not to dwell on it. Days and weeks and months went by, and the thought still stuck in his head like a thorn.

So, one fateful winter's day, the farmer brought down the old family sword that hung above the fireplace and headed off towards the distant hills. He told no one of where he was going or why, he just went. He wasn't even sure himself why he was doing what he was doing, he just knew that he must and that was that.

"In the kingdom one could gain the status of a Lord by killing a dragon, and that was no easy task!" Fred said, looking straight at Belboz. "My father, farmer D'Honaire, thought he could make an agreement with a dragon. He could stage a fight with one, and the dragon could fake a death, thus giving my father Lordship. My father would then give the dragon one third of his wealth as re-payment."

"And did your father's idea work?" Belboz asked, quite intrigued with the story.

"Yes, indeed! He found the dragon's lair, and after much negotiaiting the date was set when the dragon would attack the village and my father would valiently slay the foul beast!"

"So I have your word, human, that you will give me my deserved share of the profit?" The vile wyrm said, looking down upon farmer D'Honaire.

"You have my word." D'Honaire answered.

"So be it, human. But know this, if you break your word I will have vengence upon your Kingdom. And the wrath of a dragon is nothing to be meddled with!"

Fred shook his head. "My father never re-payed the dragon, and my Kingdom has paid the price. My father is long since dead, and now I must take the responsibility."

"That is interesting tale." Belboz replied after a brief pause. "You obviously do not have the treasure with you, so you have come to slay the dragon, yes?" Belboz raised an eyebrow at Fred.

  1. "So you've come to slay the dragon?" Belboz asked. "Yes." Fred replied.
  2. "So you've come to slay the dragon?" Belboz asked. "No, thje treasure is um...just around that corner." Fred replied.
