The Sign of Things to Come?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 16204

"Kang." Scott says simply and points. Kang, who is about to leave the chamber in disgust, stops dead in his tracks when he sees the symbol of his diety on the crate, on the books, on almost every piece of alien equipment in this strange chamber. Slith whistles when he also sees the symbols.

"Looks like.....She wants us to use this stuff, sir." Slith says in a small voice. Kang nods silently. He then turns to Scott, curious about something. "I guess that.....settles that." he says in a abstracted voice. "This stuff wasn't made by Tinker Gnomes, by any chance?"

"I rather doubt it, Kang." Scott drawls. "Those clowns are a joke when it comes to the pursuite of science.....The guns they make are more like pipe bombs....ready to kill the user than the target! The humans who made this stuff.....know a little more and are heads and shoulder better than they at it!"

"Huh." comments Kang. "One thing that does bother me, Scott. You don't strike me as...a worshiper of the Dark Queen, but you help me and the Draconians. You could have stayed silent several times and I'd have left without these weapons. You'd get out of this place....safe, without these weapons. Why? You aren't trying to suck up to me or something?"

"Kang." Scott says in a flat, patient voice. "Sucking up to YOU is not what I'm doing here. I've already explained why I was offering a deal with you draconians. I don't need your help to make it in this world. Junior seems to have taken a shining to me, and he's more of a match for most monsters out there. I did it because....Well, let's just say I have a hope."

"A....hope?" Kang and Slith echo. "A faint hope, true, but it could happen." Scott says calmly. "I'm hoping by setting you up with....decent weapons, I'd be denying the evil dragons a useful ally. You may not be on the side of 'right' and 'good', arguebly. But you hardly struck me as the rapicous monsters that your opponents make out most draconians as. You and your men are disciplined...and that strike me as....fascinating. You've never, in the 25 years in that dwarven valley, struck an undeserved blow to your neighbors. Don't say that you guys are mamby pamby paladins of light or such, but I don't think you deserve to be cannon fodder.....So, kill two birds with one stone, hopefully. Leave your destiny in YOUR hands, and not some dragon that wants to rule YOU." "What's to stop us from taking these weapons and doing bad things with them?" Slith quized Scott. "We are a ruthless and aggressive race!"

"And the human race isn't?" Scott countered. "Frankly, I can point out examples from ALL races that show that we can be even WORSE than supposed Draconian menaces!"

"Do tell." Kang says, interested. So, with that, Scott does tell! He tells how the Nazi's pulled the filling from the teeth of the Jews after killing them, for the gold and silver. He tells how the Nazi's tanned the skin of Concentration Camps to use in lamp shades. He goes on in great, gory details of these and other human failings. He also tells about the war that is happening with the dwarves in an underground city. He tells about how the elves of a world called Torril, the Drow, commit horrors on others and themselves. "Demi-humans may be....less inclined for evil." Scott finishes up. "But NO ONE species is totally free of the possibility of doing bad things. Don't know what you guys, culture wise, will eventually develope into. But I say that IF a race was to be judged solely on past deeds of others....Well, I'd say my race wouldn't like the verdict." Kang looks queesy and Slith is throwing up in a corner.

"By the Dark Queen." swears Slith, returning. "And they call us Draconian MONSTERS?!"

Scott shrugs: "I can't go back and change the wrong others on my world have done.....but I do what I think is right. Not giving you a leg up in a world where a basic building block....magic....has been knocked askew.....would be wrong. Just say I don't totally agree with the Prime Directive."

Kang lets the last strange words slide, then......

"Okay....." he says. "That answers....that. But what is the story about....Junior here? If you don't mind me asking."

  1. Scott tells Kang what happened with Junior.
