Releasing the girl from her grasp, Astra threw herself to the floor of the
ruined hall, and began pounding it with
her fists, crying: "Why? Why? Why?" None of the others dared intervene,
but after
a minute or so she regained a measure of self-control and climbed to her
feet. Her
naked body was streaked with mud and soot from the floor, and her face was
stained
with tears, as she said in a shaking voice: "First I lost my freedom and
my clothes,
to the dragon. Then
you rescued me, and I thought that my luck might have changed. But now I
have lost
my city and my family. I have lost everything."
"That defeatist talk does not sound like an Aqualarian princess," Exotica said, hoping to rouse Astra from her despair. "You have your life and your freedom. And besides, it is quite likely that your family yet live." "There must be some reason for what the Elementals did here," Fred mused. "I wonder if it means that Kharven has succeeded in getting his hands on the Stone of Destiny." "Then why did the Elementals not attack him rather than my beautiful city?" Astra asked, in a voice that still shook.
