Another Way Out And The Hall

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 1480

Indeed, there was another way out. In the darkest corner of this area was a rockfall. Part of the ceiling had collapsed.
Lord Fred set to work carefully removing the rocks. (Fortunately all signs of possible intruders had moved on for the moment). As he had thought, a tiny passage had opened.
Some of the boulders were simply too large to move. Lord Fred left them where they were and climbed over them. A few disgusting bugs were squished under his feet.
There was no more glowing lichen here (otherwise known as 'Wizard's Fortune') so Fred was forced to use one of his torches.
The passage was tiny and thin, barely enough for the stalwart knight to walk normally.
It went on straight for many hours.
Until the floor gave way.

Lord Fred snapped to awareness.
He had been laying sprawled on the floor of...the biggest hall he had ever seen. It rivaled the celebatory Weapons Museum of Chinus Minor. It put to shame the Dance Rooms of the Celebatory Halflings in Crevis Creek. Both halls plus more could fit here.
Fred carefully stepped out from behind one of the support columns.
The roof was a mile above if it was an inch. Left to right was five hundred feet. Each end of the hall was lost to sight, even with the aids of Elvish lanterns hanging from free-standing, portable metallic posts.
The air in the hall was old. Ancient. Dust coated the floors and the columns and even, against all spells, the lanterns themselves. Fred brushed a layer of grime off the nearest pillar and noticed something suprising.
The columns were three hundred feet apart and twenty feet thick. Fred ran his hand over the closest one. Inscribed on the stonework were images. Not words but finely detailed images of battles. And celebrations. And confrontations. Each column had them and the inscriptions went up for twenty feet on all the columns he could see in the light.
Fred drew his sword before he even realized what was warning him so.
What was so alarming that Lord Fred's warrior senses picked up on it first?

  1. An Elvish lantern hissed, sparked and exploded.
  2. A party of adventurers, nine strong, strode out from behind a column. Elf, drawf, two men, four halflings and a wizard.
  3. A metallic ball, rolling under it's own power.
  4. One of the columns was collapsing!
  5. Part of a column two down swung open. Inside was a staircase!
