You open the book. The first page is blank; the second says "Flagg's Big Book O' Spells," and below that: Death Publishing. Turning the page, you see there are several items on the reverse side of the page. Near the top is "Copyright (c) 1032 by Randall Flagg. All rights reserved." Below that is the admonition. "This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents either are the product of the author's imagination or are use fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events or locales is entirely coincidental. The publisher does not guarentee the success or failure of any spells contained herein." Fascinating, you think.

  3. Start reading the preface.
  4. See how well the book's spine has held up over the years.
  5. Look around the rest of the room.
  6. Suddenly, someone appears in the room...
