Fred tears the meat between his teeth. "Is this then the dragon I chew,
woman?"
"Indeed, it is of the same beast."
"And how, praytell, wert thou to slay this dragon?"
"I beat it with the stick."
"With the stick?"
"Yea. 'Twas a large stick. I struck it 'round and 'round until the beast
fell dead. It had a horn the size of me whole hand ya know, and was of a
ghastly white coloring. It had hoves, and threatened to run me through wid
its 'orn, but I slew it, indeed I did."
You realize this meat tastes much like a goat.
"Thou noble woman," you say.
Just then, a much younger lady comes and sits beside the raging fire.
"And with whom do you eat, dear mother?"
"I am Sir Fred, of the table of King Caphalus. I am come to kill the green
dragon which haunts these parts and restore peace to the kind inhabitants."
"Peace?" says the girl.
"Now, Letitia," says the older woman, "let the man say what he will."
"With respect, dear mother, should he wish for peace, why would he not slay
the brigands who steal our livestock and burn our houses? The dragon pales
in comparison to those beasts! Nay, but I should lead thee thither, would
thou wish."
