Fred set to work on prying the stone loose. The mercenaries had taken his knapsack, bow and arrow and sword, but they had not checked his clothing thoroughly and from under his belt, Fred pulled the tiny dagger he kept hidden there, unsheathed it and began picking away at the mortar. The old man joined him, producing a bent and rusty spoon and digging away at the mortar on the other side. Fred deduced that it must have been the old man who had worked the stone partially loose in the first place. With the two of them working in tandem it wasn't long before there was a satisfying thud as the huge stone came loose and plonked to the ground. Fred wriggled through the tight hole in the wall, grateful for the lessons he received from a contortionist only months earlier when he was considering following in he footsteps of Houdini, and found himself...
