Carola saw Caemlyn in front of her, with the great castle at its heart rising high above the rest of the city. But unlike in her vision, both the city and the castle were undamaged. "Thank the Goddess that it hasn't happened yet," she said, referring to her vision. She had had no way of knowing whether it had shown her the present or the future, and she still did not know whether Caemlyn's destruction was an inevitable future or one that might yet be changed.
Naturally, as an Allarian Jarlath was even more relieved. (Matthias had been too far gone into rabbithood to really take in what Carola had said when she told the others of her vision.) But as they grew close enough to see the devices on the banners that fluttered on the town's walls and on top of the castle's keep, our heroes' relief was replaced by dread. "Those are the Dragon's banners," Belinda said. "So Fred and Astra have failed," Carola said dully. "Not necessarily," Matthais said. "They may have succeeded in killing the wyrm, but the news has not yet reached Caemlyn. Remember that the Ancients brought us here in their ship. I don't know what that means - there is no sea between the Shreken and Caemlyn - but I imagine that we came here much faster than Fred and Astra could have. So there is still hope that the dragon is dead but that his forces do not know it yet." "Indeed so," Syrreq said, though he did not explain what the Ship was. "Or the news might have reached here, but even after his death the Dragon's forces have remained loyal," Jarlath suggested. "I doubt it," Belinda said drily. "Having been his prisoners for six months, Carola and I know more of him than you do. I can assure you that he was not a good employer. The commanders who served him mostly did so under duress, our sister's case being not untypical." "As an Ancient, you must be amazingly powerful," Carola said to Syrreq. "Can you help us to liberate Caemlyn?"
