Gold Dragon

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 10386

When Belboz was finished describing the various kinds of dragons, Fred replied with, "You are amazingly knowledgable on the subject of dragons. I wonder how you have gotten such knowledge?"

Belboz sneered at Fred and said, "From years of dangerous, toilsome travail. I've traveled the world over tracking dragonkind, unearthing ancient lore written down by our forefathers, witnessing first hand their majestic power. For the last ten years I've made this desolate hole my home. For ten years I've watched and studied the dragon who dwells here. And more than once I've nearly met my death. That is how I've come by my knowledge!"

"And in all those years you have never sought to serve them?" Fred asked. "Or have them serve you?"

"They are beasts!" Belboz retorted. "I am a man and know enough that a man who serves a beast becomes less than a beast in the end. As for seeking to gain mastery over a Winged Lizard, such a quest would be most foolhardy. And I am no fool. I have dedicated my life to the acquisition of knowledge. In my quest I have courted danger many times. But I have never courted Death. In such a courtship, Death will always be the winner."

"But surely not all dragons are mindless beasts," Fred replied. "The Dragon of Gold is a creature of both keen intelligence and, so you say, goodwill."

"I never said that dragons were mindless," Belboz huffed. "I said they were beasts! And beasts are not necessarily stupid. But they are most definitely not human. And so, as far as their goodwill goes, it is the goodwill of a dragon, which you would do well to remember won't be the same as a man's."

"And if you changed me into a dragon," Fred asked. "Would I still be 'me'? Or would I lose my humanity in exchange for the will and nature of an inhuman beast?"

Belboz grinned ominously and replied, "That all depends on you. The greater your humanity the less easily shall you succumb to the nature of the beast. But if you are a base and corrupt man... well, I doubt you'll ever come back to have the spell reversed."

"Oh, you'll be seeing me again," Fred said defiantly. "So have that spell in readiness. But for now, I wish you to use your magic to change me into a Gold Dragon. If I must wear the skin of a damned lizard, let it be one with cunning and at least some measure of goodness in its heart."

"Your wish is my command..." Belboz smiled.

  1. Belboz prepared Fred in the proper magical fashion and when all was in readiness cast his spell and Fred transformed into a stately and proud Gold Dragon!
