Fred and Astra Delany live a modest, middle-class life. Fred is a
supervisor at an outsource tech-support company and Astra is middle-
management at a department store. They live in Memphis, TN, and have a nice
home in Cordova (a pleasant suburb). Fred and Astra have no children, but not for lack of trying. They are confident that when it is meant to be, it will happen. They are involved in their community, attend a local church, and pay their taxes. They support the poor and needy, vote every time, and fight no more than your average healthy marriage. It is September fifteenth, 2010 (a Wednesday) at 4:16 PM. Fred is going over the numbers for his team's performance this week, when his phone rings. "Dang it!" he exclaims, "always an interruption." He then answers, noting that it is Peter Barnwell, VP of Operations. His heart rate goes up, as Peter has oversight over the whole Memphis location.
As soon as Fred answers, Peter starts talking. He is an overtalker, it is
just the way he is. "Hey Fred how are you? Great. Look, Tom Wilkins has
been let go. I know, big shocker, but he was distributing pornography over
our internal network. Big no-no, sure you understand that. In any case, we
have decided to offer you a huge promotion. I am e-mailing you the details
now, please respond to the e-mail with your acceptance or declination of
this offer by the end of business today. Thanks. Gotta go." Fred's head whirls with the knows. Tom Wilkins was Site Director for the Memphis site of Oceanic Solutions, the company for which Fred works. If Fred was being offered that job... he quickly pulls up his e-mail, and finds the offer.
